Khanyile, a South African Deep House producer, composer, audio
engineer, and the founder of Mate Music Entertainment. He is a
torchbearer of the [Grootman Music] sound — soulful, percussive,
sun-soaked house built for mature audiences.

Retro Africa is the professional stage name of Themba Austin
Khanyile, a South African Deep House producer, composer, audio
engineer, and the founder of Mate Music Entertainment. He came up
in Soweto shaping a
patient, percussive strain of South African Deep House that would
later be branded [Grootman Music] — sun-soaked, spiritual, and
unmistakably grown. Since MME001 "Tired Soul" (2019), his catalogue
has grown to five bodies of work, including the full-length albums
Unforgettable (2021) and Midnight Architecture (2026). He self-records,
self-produces, and self-masters — a rare full-stack signature in the
South African independent house scene. In 2026 he releases his most
ambitious body of work to date: Jack Of All Trades (MME006), a 15-track
long-play arriving worldwide on August 28, 2026, preceded by a
three-single pre-release bundle on August 7. Retro Africa is the
founder of Mate Music Entertainment, the independent label he
built to home his own catalogue and develop the next generation
of Grootman Music artists.
